Good Friday Kite Flying
Nevis, West Indies
Every Good Friday, Nevisians young and old head to The Flats in Cole Hill to fly kites—many of them homemade. The festival features carnival games, competitions (biggest kite, most colorful kite, highest-flying kite!)—and lots of cotton candy. In April, 2022, I photographed the festivities in the stunning late afternoon light. A reggae band was playing. The Carib beer was flowing. The crowd, growing. The wind was strong and steady. The sun was shining from the west, but dark clouds gathered from the east. The party was poised to go into the evening until the sky opened and dumped a torrential downpour the likes of which I’ve never seen. A total tropical washout. That happens on Nevis. People are used to it. Party over, but boy was it fun while it lasted.
